Nature,
in Umbria, is amiable and sweet just like its hills and exactly
this feeling of peace and wellbeing, during the centuries, favoured
the birth and the spreading of important religious orders. Whilst
retracing the places which marked Saint Francis
and Saint Clair of Assisi and Montefalco, Saint
Benedict of Norcia and Saint Rita of Cascia’s
spiritual itineraries, it still is possible to breath the rarified
and mystic atmosphere; there are several abbeys, convents and monasteries
which still today testify directly this great spiritual tradition.
Among the most significant churches which are worth the while to
remember is the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, also for the
Giotto’s famous series of frescoes dedicated
to the Saint’s life, the Cathedral of Spoleto
and the Duomo of Orvieto, which represents one
of the major examples in Italian Goth architecture.
