PASSIGNANO sul TRASIMENO
Boats
Contest
In 1945, a small army of Sienese and outlaws from Perugia
occupied the castle of Passignano. Perugia's reaction was so violent
that the invaders fled with their boats over the lake seeking salvation
towards the islands, without succeeding. Today's Palio of the barche
proceeds from that distant episode, a highly spectacular race and
unique in its genre and is articulated in three steps: the first and
third in the lake, the second on shore, with their boats on their
backs along the alleys of the historical centre. The race, on the
last Sunday of July, involves around 160 performers divided among
the four districts: Historical Centre, Centro 2, Oliveto and San Donato,
which are symbolized by four lake fishes: Carpa Regina, Luccio, Capitone
and Persico. Within the Palio there is also the "Corsa delle
Brocche" (Jug contest), reserved for women. |
