FOLIGNO
Quintain
Race
The Giostra della Quintana gains its origins from a XVII century horse
race during which the precedence order of a knight regarding loyalty
towards a Prince or Dame was established. In today's event ten knights,
one for each of Foligno's quarter, challenge each other riding war
horses and attempting to transfix a series of rings with decreasing
diameter. The joust is preceded by a costume parade along the towns
streets. |

mainly characterized by skilled masters who produce common use objects
in their workshops by using only techniques and work methods belonging
to the Middle Ages. During the event shows, concerts, exhibitions
and bow and arrow contests are held. |

PIEDILUCO-TERNI
Waters Festivity
In Piediluco, since distant times, summer solstice was celebrated
through rites, fireworks and allegoric boat parades. During centuries,
whilst keeping unvaried traditions and original characteristics, the
event was enriched by further activities. It is currently enhanced
by a suggestive night parade of allegoric boats, wisely decorated
and lighted. Other features are firework shows, plays and symphonic
concerts. |

SPELLO
Corpus
Christi Floral Decorations
Each year on Corpus Domini day, Spello is covered in flowers. The
town's main streets, for a length of over a kilometer, are covered
of beautiful flower floor covering which celebrate Jesus in the communion.
Every pattern is inspired by religious themes and well-known paintings
according to the artists' fantasy. The rite is linked to the habit
to lay down flowers at the moment of the passing of sacred images
during the procession and thanks to the people's passion and enthusiasm,
the making of the wonderful floor covering involves the entire town
and attracts to Spello thousands of tourists from all over Italy and
abroad. Each flower picture is the result of complex and difficult
work requiring days and days patience. It is carried out by many people
who, divided into groups, have different tasks: research, harvest,
flower treatment and keeping; petal selection and cutting; layout
analyses. Finally during the afternoon and on the night of Saturday
before the event, the flower adorners bent over pavements, draw, lay
and arrange the thousands and thousands of petals which form part
of the drawing. In the late hours of Sunday morning, the procession
passes over the astonishing decking with flowers. The bishop leads
the group while holding a monstrance, but the popular rite goes on:
the jury still has to make up its mind and hands out prizes for the
best works in the afternoon. |
