Fortresses, castles and defence systems in Umbria
Fortresses
Fortresses have covered a strategic positions in the history of war techniques:
first conceived for defense purposes they have not underwent during centuries
substantial transformations from an architectural point of view, remaining
a spectator of political, economic and social events.
Castles
As centuries went by, the role of the castle's defensive structure underwent
a sound streamlining: at the beginning of modern age the inner side of
castles, the palace, modified as to meet more and more the owners' lifestyle,
turning into luxury home, and allowing that these monuments were elevated
to great high-class dwellings.
Several kinds of castles can be admired in our region even if unfortunately
there is not much left of the majority of castles as a consequence of
constant wars which Umbria faced in the Middle Ages. However, there are
some superb castles still in perfect conditions.
