Monasticism and abbeys in Umbria

The birth of monastic communities aimed at fulfilling an "extra-mundane" society involved Italy and the region of Umbria since distant times. The idea that mankind's supreme salvation depends on the breach with the outer world and any kind of relationships, translates into architecture, in the construction of wonderful isolated buildings, true towns in miniature, totally independent: abbeys. In Umbria the presence of the Benedictine monastic order is of remarkable importance and is linked to examples of surprising architectural interest.
